Amherst is a town in northwestern Nova Scotia, Canada, situated at the northeast end of the Cumberland Basin, an arm of the Bay of Fundy. The town sits on a height of land at the eastern boundary of the Isthmus of Chignecto and the Tantramar Marshes, approximately 3 km east of the interprovincial border with New Brunswick.

Location and Geography

Amherst lies roughly 22 km south of the Northumberland Strait and 65 km southeast of the city of Moncton. Its position at the eastern edge of the Isthmus of Chignecto places it at a notable geographic crossroads between the Maritime provinces. The surrounding Tantramar Marshes form a distinctive part of the landscape in this corner of Nova Scotia.

Regional Connections

The town is located 60 km southwest of the New Brunswick abutment of the Confederation Bridge to Prince Edward Island at Cape Jourimain. This proximity to both New Brunswick and the bridge connection to Prince Edward Island reflects Amherst’s position as a gateway community within the broader region of the Maritime provinces.
