Tangier Map

Tangier is a rural community on the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia, located within the Halifax Regional Municipality. It sits along the Marine Drive on Nova Scotia Trunk 7, approximately 23 km west of Sheet Harbour, and is situated at the head of Tangier Harbour. The community also lies at the mouth of the Tangier River. The Mi’kmaq name for the settlement was Wospegeak, which translates to “the sunshine is reflected from the water.” The present name of the community is most likely derived from the shipwreck of the schooner Tangier in 1830.

Gold Mining History

In 1858, gold was discovered in the Tangier area, which sparked mining operations that continued for the next 30 years. This discovery made Tangier part of a broader gold rush that shaped settlement and industry along Nova Scotia’s Eastern Shore during the latter half of the nineteenth century.

Community and Landmarks

Today, Tangier remains a small rural community with a modest collection of local facilities. It has a church, a post office, and several private fishing wharfs that reflect the community’s longstanding connection to the sea. Its position along the Marine Drive corridor places it within reach of other Eastern Shore communities, while its setting at Tangier Harbour continues to define much of its character and local activity.
