Canso Map

Canso is an unincorporated community and former incorporated town located in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, Canada. It sits at the far north eastern tip of mainland Nova Scotia, at the mouth of Chedabucto Bay. The area was first settled as a fishing settlement in the 1600s, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the province. Canso was incorporated as a town in 1901, though it ceased to be a separate municipality in January 2012 and was amalgamated into the Municipality of the District of Guysborough in July 2012.

Historical Significance

Canso holds considerable national historic importance as one of only two British settlements in Nova Scotia prior to the establishment of Halifax in 1749. The construction of a British fort in the village in 1720 played an instrumental role in contributing to the outbreak of Dummer’s War in 1722. The community also played a key role in the defeat of the Fortress of Louisbourg, cementing its place in the broader history of colonial Canada.

Community and Culture

Today, Canso is known internationally for the annual Stan Rogers Folk Festival, which draws visitors from around the world each year. The festival reflects the community’s enduring cultural identity and its connection to maritime heritage. Though small in population, Canso’s combination of deep historical roots and a vibrant folk music tradition continues to draw attention well beyond the boundaries of Guysborough County.
