Gabarus is a community located in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Situated on Cape Breton Island, the community has a history rooted in the fishing industry, and today continues to be home to a small resident population supported by fishing and tourism.
Historical Economy
For much of its earlier history, Gabarus served as an important fisheries centre. The community was home to a cannery, which played a significant role in its economy until the mid-20th century. This industrial fishing heritage shaped the character and development of Gabarus during that period.
Economy Today
In the present day, Gabarus is sustained by two main activities: tourism and small-scale commercial fishing. Lobster fishing is among the commercial fishing activities that continue to contribute to the local economy. The shift away from large-scale industrial fishing toward smaller operations and tourism reflects broader changes that many similar communities in Nova Scotia have experienced over the decades.
