Guysborough, officially known as the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, is a district municipality located in Guysborough County, Nova Scotia. The municipal office is situated in Guysborough. The area was first inhabited by the Mi’kmaq, and was later colonised by France during the 17th century. Following the American Revolutionary War, large numbers of Loyalists settled in the region.
Formation of the Municipality
The Municipality of the District of Guysborough was created in 1879, when the administration of Guysborough County was divided between Guysborough and St. Mary’s. This division established the administrative framework that would shape the region for decades to come.
Canso and Municipal Changes
Canso was incorporated as a town in 1901, operating independently from the surrounding municipality for over a century. In 2012, however, Canso dissolved its town status and rejoined the Municipality of the District of Guysborough, bringing the community back under the umbrella of the broader municipal district.
